Sir Paul Beresford backs water fluoridation in Parliament

Speaking in a House of Commons debate, dentist Sir Paul Beresford MP said that water fluoridation was ‘by far and away the best-proven method to reduce tooth decay among children, and even more so among adults, is fluoridation of the water supply’. He said one problem it is left for local authorities ‘to instigate and compel companies to fluoridate their water supplies’.

Brush DJ app hits 400,000 downloads in 204 countries

The free Brush DJ app, which uses music to engage and motivate users users to have an effective oral hygiene routine has kicked off 2020 by receiving its 400,000th download. The app has also reached people in 204 countries and remains the only dental app in the NHS App Library. Founder Ben Underwood said ‘this fantastic milestone would not have been possible without all the people who have helped build, test and champion the app.’

Dentist accused of setting fire in 5-year-old's mouth

The parents of a 5-year-old girl say a Las Vegas dentist set their daughter’s mouth on fire as she underwent a routine dental procedure. They have filed a lawsuit in state district court against Deep Karan Dhillon for injuries the girl suffered. According to court documents, the dentist used a diamond bur to smooth the girl’s teeth while she was under anesthetics.

Clash of opinions over effectiveness of sugar tax

During Sugar Awareness Week (January 20-26) different opinions have emerged over the effectiveness of the so-called sugar tax. Writing in inews, Tom Bawden said that the tax ‘drives sharp decrease in sweetness of soft drinks.’ But from the Spectator, Kate Andrews says ‘the sugar tax is only a success if you ignore the evidence.

FGDP urges botox ad compliance

The Faculty is encouraging dentists and dental practices offering botulinum toxin injections to ensure their marketing is legally compliant. New guidance says there can be no direct references to a prescription-only medicine or treatment, whether via a brand name, brand-like name or in the generic, including in images and hashtags or in promotions such as sale packages and competition prizes.

Research published on patients’ response to information given at check-ups

Research has been done comparing how patients value and respond to information on risk given in three different forms during dental check-ups. The PREFER randomised controlled trial has been published. It aims to compare patient preference for, and subsequent change in, oral health behaviour for three forms of risk information given at dental check-ups.
