Two fifths of claims go back over ten years says Dental Protection

New data published by Dental Protection reveals that almost 40% of its estimated annual claims costs in 2018 related to cases where treatment started ten or more years ago before the claim was made. Raj Rattan, Dental Director at Dental Protection, said: “We clearly live in an increasingly litigious environment and dentists need to be confident that they can request support from their indemnifier in 10, 20, or even 30 years time.”

Oral Health Foundation announces new strategy for oral health

The Oral Health Foundation has launched its new strategy for oral health, which will run until 2024. Titled ‘Better oral health for all’, which addresses the world’s growing oral health demands. It also sets out how the charity will tackle oral disease and help improve the quality of life for millions of people in the UK and around the world. It comes at a time where half the globe’s adult population have tooth decay, including 500 million children who have decay in their deciduous teeth.

Mark Bishop elected to BDA Board

In what many will see as a blow to the BDA’s recent moves towards increasing diversity in its leadership roles, Mark Bishop, a retired private endodontist from Hastings, has won election to the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee. In the final round of voting he beat off a strong challenge by Lauren Harrhy, wining by 608 votes to 499.

Dentists demand consistency after changes to NHS pension scheme

The BDA has called on the government to ensure all members of the NHS Pension scheme benefit from new pledges made to senior medics offering full flexibility over the amount they can put into their pension pots. PEC Chair Mick Armstrong said: “Deliver consistency on NHS pensions, or open the floodgates to legal challenges.”

The highs and lows of sugar content revealed

Starbucks, Costa and McDonald’s are selling iced coffees with two days’ worth of sugar and campaigners want the ’sugar tax’ to cover coffee shops too. But brands say their sugary creations are just an ’occasional treat’. Meanwhile a new version of the Cadbury Dairy Milk bar containing 30% less sugar has gone on sale as part of industry efforts to reduce obesity.

Teenagers’ oral health worse in long term computer users

The Irish News has published an article by Lucy Stock, a Belfast dentist, which reveals that teens who spend more time on computers are significantly more likely to neglect their oral health. It claims that computer addicted teens are are up to 25% more likely to have bleeding gums and almost twice as likely to miss school due to dental pain.
