The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has sought views about indemnity cover for dentists and other healthcare professionals who are not covered by any existing or proposed state-backed scheme, via an open consultation Appropriate clinical negligence cover which closed on 28 February. Three indemnity providers have responded.

Dentist Ben Underwood, creator of the Brush DJ app has been announced as a winner of a national Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) Healthcare competition to improve children’s oral health. Ben Underwood, CEO of Brush DJ Ltd said, “It is amazing to have not only this financial support and recognition, but, critically, access to the expertise of SBRI and its partners.”

Tens of thousands of people have joined a campaign to save six labradors from being put down at the end of a medical trial in a Swedish laboratory. The dogs have had a third of their teeth removed and replaced with human dental implants at Gothenburg University. A protest has been held outside the university and a petition with more than 80,000 signatures has been handed in.

The BDA has welcomed Health Education England’s recommendations for sweeping action on stress across health professions, and renewed its call for parity in provision between NHS dentists and GPs on occupational health. BDA Chair Mick Armstrong said: “It is refreshing to see officials waking up to the weight of evidence on stress and burnout in this profession.”

A research team led by Greig Taylor of Newcastle University, identifies the need for clear guidance for their management.
