GDC attempting to extend remit at expense of registrants

The British Dental Association (BDA) has expressed grave concerns that the General Dental Council (GDC) is attempting to extend its remit well beyond the duties given to it by Parliament, in its response to the regulator’s consultation on its corporate strategy for 2016-19, which has now closed. Mick Armstrong, Chair of the BDA, said: “It looks like the dental regulator is attempting to extend its remit at the expense of registrants.”

GDPUK launches Private Dental Fees Survey 2015

BDHF reports "upsurge" in calls to helpline

The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) has reported an upsurge in calls to its Dental Helpline, for the second consecutive year. It says those seeking advice about their dental health over the last 12 months has increased by 17% compared with last year. Nigel Carter, Chief Executive of BDHF believes the success of the Dental Helpline is down to its sustained presence of providing independent and expert advice.

ADA: Prospects for US dentists’ earnings ‘remain unclear’

The American Dental Association (ADA) has found that dentists’ earnings in the USA are not rebounding after the recession. Their research also shows that additional capacity is available in the dental care system, while the supply of dentists is expected to increase. They conclude that the prospects for dentist earnings ‘remain unclear’.

Plymouth study to investigate new approach to prevention in children

Researchers at Plymouth University Peninsula School of Dentistry have received £150,000 of funding for a study into the oral health of toddlers. This follows findings by Foundation Dean Professor Elizabeth Kay that action to prevent tooth decay in children, such as supervised tooth brushing and fluoride varnish schemes, could also result in cost savings to the NHS of hundreds of pounds per child.

USA mother arrested for neglecting child’s teeth

A Florida ‘mom’ has been arrested after authorities say she repeatedly ignored a dentist's warning that her 4-year-old needed surgery on her rotting teeth. According to an arrest affidavit, the Sheriff's officials say Catlyn Haley was told by a dentist and multiple other medical professionals for more than a year that her daughter had severe cavities.
