Dental treatment during pregnancy is safe says ADA

It's safe for pregnant women to undergo dental treatment with local anesthetics, according to a new study published in The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA). “Our study identified no evidence to show that dental treatment with local anesthetics [LA] is harmful during pregnancy, and yet so many pregnant women avoid going to the dentist,” said study author Aharon Hagai. “We aimed to determine if there was a significant risk associated with dental treatment with anesthesia and pregnancy outcomes. We did not find any such risk.”

IDH rebranded as {my}dentist

The rebranding of the dental corporate Integrated Dental Holdings as {my}dentist has now been officially announced, although the change has been widely broadcast for some months. Already 204 practices throughout the UK have undergone a major upgrade as part of the new branding. Another 500 practices are set to be upgraded and branded this year. We are not at fault says GDC

The General Dental Council (GDC) has responded to the damning report by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) by denying that the problem lies with them. Chief Executive Evlynne Gilvarry, said: “The GDC has been campaigning for legislative change to improve the effectiveness of regulation of dental professionals for a number of years. We hope that ministers will take the time to consider the PSA’s warnings and act accordingly”.

BDA calls for urgent action on healthcare regulators

The British Dental Association (BDA) has called on government to act on new calls from the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) for radical action on out-of-date, over-complicated and expensive healthcare regulation, contained in its report, Rethinking Regulation. BDA chairman, Mick Armstrong, said: “Too many regulators have lost the confidence of their professions. Effective independent regulation requires trust, and rebuilding that will mean genuine engagement, not just lip service.”

The British Dental Association (BDA) has reported that Professor Jimmy Steele gave a thought-provoking lecture on oral health care in a changing world at the BDJ/BDA's anniversary lecture in London on the 2 July. Addressing a full lecture theatre, he said that although there has been a profound reduction in the prevalence of tooth decay, major inequalities still exist across the UK.
