GDC issues advice on CPD

The General Dental Council (GDC) has issued advice on obtaining Continuing Professional Development (CPD). It’s now less than a year until nearly 40-thousand Dental Care Professionals (DCPs) will reach the end of their first five year CPD cycle. Of those who have declared what they have done so far 36% have logged more than the minimum hours; 11% have logged no hours. Dental Technicians are currently the least likely to have logged their hours - 22% having not yet declared any.

Manchester practice to receive BDA award

A dental practice in Manchester has been named British Dental Association (BDA) Good Practice Scheme Practice of the Year, it was announced this week. Maple Dental Care Ltd, in the Brooklands area of Manchester, won the award following a rigorous selection process, which included a visit to the practice by judges for the Scheme.

Dental Protection reaches 60,000 members

Dental Protection passed the 50,000 mark at the end of 2007 and less than five years later another 10,000 more people have joined the organisation to bring the total membership to 60,000. This is quite remarkable considering that it took almost 90 years to gather the first 20,000 members. Dental Director Kevin Lewis announced the figures.

Dental complaints down NHS figures show

Dentistry has bucked the trend for increasing complaints about NHS services in England, new statistics suggest. Data released by the NHS Information Centre shows that written complaints for dental services in hospital and community health services, as well as in general dental practice services, have fallen.

Manchester professor wins international award

A University of Manchester professor has won an international award for her research in dentistry and oral health care. Professor Helen Worthington, from the School of Dentistry, received the 2012 H Trendley Dean Memorial Award from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) at their session in Brazil.

Half of U.S. adults have periodontal disease

One out of every two American adults age 30 or older has periodontal disease, according to a new study published in the Journal of Dental Research. The findings were collected as part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a program of studies designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the U.S.
