A Maidstone dental technician was found with £1 million worth of drugs stashed in two Bag for Life containers at his work premises. Andrew Mackie, 53, was arrested after drugs squad officers raided Precision Chrome Castings in East Farleigh. He was jailed for eight years and four months following a spectacular fall from grace after he began "hob-nobbing" with dealers who supplied his need for cocaine.

The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers (NASDAL) is warning dentists and particularly associates, to rely on specialist dental tax sources of advice in regard to upcoming IR35 legislation changes. There have been several inaccurate statements recently published in relation to the change in tax rules being introduced with effect from April 2020.

The Manchester Evening News has reported that police have launched an investigation after a ’premeditated arson attack’ on a pair of dental labs in Farnworth, Greater Manchester. They have discovered CCTV footage of two men, who they believe to have started the blaze, entering the rear of the building and there was a large explosion soon after.

Nearly all of the consumers involved in a class-action lawsuit accusing SmileDirectClub of false advertising and violation of US federal law have dropped out of the case. Twenty-one plaintiffs filed a motion voluntarily dismissing their case against the Nashville-based company. Of the two remaining plaintiffs, one remains in court while the other has been sent to arbitration.

A whole systems approach is needed to tackling childhood tooth decay, according to a new report by the Local Government Association. It contains a whole range of examples of the steps that need to be taken to achieve success. Many of the areas included are places where there have traditionally been high rates of tooth decay, but where significant improvements are now being made.

The letter, drafted by Tony Kilcoyne and headlined ‘A lack of funding and an increase in bureaucracy have left NHS dentistry in a rotten state’, was published in the Daily Telegraph on January 2. It had been ‘signed’ by 1,003 dentists including, it would appear, the chair of the General Dental Practice Committee, Dave Cottam.

He has interests in Oral Health promotion & Implant Dentistry, and is an LDC Secretary and Local Dental Network Chair. Also honoured is well known retired Manchester dentist, Dr Peter Kurer, awarded BEM for services to Holocaust Education.
