The Crisis at Christmas Dental Service @CrisisDental had seen over 320 people, plus @DenTech_charity have been making dentures for the homeless. Some amazing dentists and their teams volunteered on Christmas Day and over the holiday to give their guests the best smile possible.

The indomitable Claire Stevens – aka the Toothfairy – has been appointed CBE – Commander of the Order of the British Empire– in the 2019 New Year’s Honours List in recognition of her tireless commitment to improving children’s oral health. As their official spokesperson and immediate past President, the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) are proud beyond measure. There were no other 'dental' names on the list.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd)’s Faculty of Dental Surgery, together with sponsors Dentsply Sirona, continue with heats of their nationwide Dental Clinical Skills Competition running in dental schools across the UK and Ireland this autumn/winter 2018-2019.

The Home Secretary, Sajid Javid MP, has published proposals for immigration controls following Brexit on March 29, 2019. The new system should allow dentists, as ‘skilled workers’, to enter the UK whether they come from the EU, EEA or anywhere in the world. However, entrants will need to earn at least £30,000 which may exclude some Dental Care Professionals.

Experts advising the Government have said there is not enough scientific evidence to warrant a ban on the sale of energy drinks to children. Public Health England had issued a commissioning guide to provide better oral health for vulnerable older people. Dr Sandra White, national lead for dental public health, said “Maintaining good oral health throughout life and into older age not only improves our general health and wellbeing, but plays a part in helping us stay independent for as long as possible.”

BDA Scotland has welcomed clarity from the Scottish Government that it will not proceed with 24-month recall intervals for ‘low risk’ patients by default. Robert Donald, Chair of the BDA’s Scottish Council said: “We welcome assurances that 24-month dental recall intervals will not be introduced - and that ‘high-risk’ patients will be seen more frequently than those in good oral health.

A woman convicted of illegally whitening people’s teeth has told BBC Scotland she did not know what she was doing was against the law. Brenda McFadyen was fined £1,000 after she pleaded guilty to the illegal practice of dentistry, by offering illegal tooth whitening treatment from her home address. She used the name “Pearly Whites Teeth Whitening”.

The Derry Journal reports that the lack of an updated Northern Ireland oral health strategy in a region with the ‘worst dental health’ in the whole of the UK has been branded ‘entirely unacceptable’ by the SDLP health spokesman Mark Durkan MLA. He was responding to scathing criticisms by the BDA over what it branded a lack of direction in oral health policy.
