The General Dental Council (GDC) has released figures showing that 2,092 dentists did not renew their registration in January this year. This compares with 1,455 at the same time in 2014. William Moyes, GDC chairman, marked the New Year with a letter to registrants, defending the stance he has taken.

A pilot scheme is being launched this month which will aim to ensure that concerns about dentist's performance are handled where appropriate by the local NHS in England, rather than by the General Dental Council (GDC). Chief Executive and Registrar, Evlynne Gilvarry, said: “The scheme has the potential to enable the GDC to focus more of its resources on cases where patients are at risk because the dentists' fitness to practise may be impaired.”

The Children's Food Campaign has published figures showing that the introduction of a 20 pence per litre duty on sugary drinks would benefit Londoners' health, as well as save the NHS in London £39 million over twenty years. However another report says that Britain ‘is falling out of love with fruit juice’, according to a report which found that sales fell after campaigns about their high sugar content.

A recent survey of Lithuanian dentists found that one third of them work long hours and lack patients. Many dentists practice in multiple locations and plan to retire after the official retirement age. Some dentists and dental specialists plan to emigrate. The perceived shortcomings within the dental care system and workforce planning of dentists need to be addressed, the researchers say.

The Nottingham Post has reported dentists’ concerns about the high number of UDAs disgraced dentists Desmond D’Mello had to provide. Two Nottinghamshire dentists have said most dentists are expected to perform 7,000 UDA’s per year. But an NHS contract report showed Mr D’Mello’s two-person practice was contracted to do 29,000 UDA’s in 2014-15.

The on-going police investigation into the thefts at 2014’s BDIA Showcase has resulted in the Metropolitan Police force releasing photos of the suspects. Around £130,000 worth of handpieces were taken from the NSK and Bien-Air stands on the evening of Thursday 9 October, after the show had closed to dental professionals.

Around nine out of 10 dentists completing their vocational or foundation training this summer found a post, according to the latest research from the British Dental Association (BDA). Dr Judith Husband, Chair of the BDA’s Education, Ethics and the Dental Team Working Group, said: “It's encouraging to see that employment prospects in general dental practice appear to be improving for newly-qualified practitioners.”

The death of Per-Ingvar Branemark on December 20th. at the age of 85 was announced just before Christmas. He had been ill for some time. He was credited with the discovery of osseointegration, the ability for titanium to integrate with bone. This forms the basis of dental implantology, and osseointegration became the basis for other life enhancing technologies.

The Sunday Times has reported that experts from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh have said that patients are paying thousands of pounds for ‘quick-fix cosmetic dentistry’ that does not last. The college says vulnerable patients are being poorly informed about long-term damage and complications resulting from some of the most popular procedures.
