Post-menopausal women at risk of losing teeth

New research forecasts that over one in four post-menopausal women are likely to suffer tooth loss over a five year period, and the risk increases to nearly 90 per cent if other risk factors are present, especially diabetes and if they smoke. The impact of the menopause may go some way to explain why women more often suffer from tooth loss, despite generally having better oral health than men.

BDA condemns end of seniority pay

Experienced dentists feel angry and let-down at news that an expected extension to the deadline for joining the seniority pay scheme may not be forthcoming, Dr John Milne, Chair of the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee, has warned. The BDA has been informed at a very late stage of the process for putting an extension in place that legal difficulties may prevent that happening.

Teenager habits revealed

British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) is calling for teenagers to improve their oral hygiene, after a recent study revealed adolescents who smoke are more likely to abandon the basics, such as brushing their teeth twice a day. On the other hand a Government survey showed that consumption of sugar and confectionary among most age groups is declining.

BDA financial crisis? BDA to raid Branch funds

BDA Chief executive, Peter Ward, has written to all Branch Chairmen and Treasurers with proposals for them to return any surplus funds they had at the end of the last financial year (30.Sep.10) to the BDA centrally and to accept a 50% reduction in next year’s grants. GDPUK understands that the BDA’s Board of Directors (the Representative Body) were not informed of the letter nor of its contents.

NASDA warns on superannuation certificates

Dentists should have recently received their superannuation form SD86C for the year 2010-11. “If in the past you haven’t given any attention to this certificate, you certainly should now”, says Johnny Minford, a chartered accountant and member of the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants (NASDA). “Superannuation certificates could be positively dangerous,” he adds.

Department issues quarterly UDA statistics

Statistics for dental commissioning for the quarter ending June 2011 have been released by the Department of Health. This shows that 89.0 million UDAs were commissioned as at 30th June. This represents a decrease of 52,000 (less than 0.1%) on the UDAs commissioned as at 31st March 2011.

CQC pursues unregistered practices

The Care Quality Commission is taking steps to register practices that either missed the 1 April registration deadline or provided incomplete applications. Those operating before the deadline were invited to make a "transitional application". A small number of providers failed to do so and will be contacted from this week.

BDA commissioning survey gives mixed results

Commissioning of NHS dental services is experiencing a turbulent period as it contends with structural change in the NHS, the launch of pilots for a new dental contract and pressures on funding. The BDA survey of PCTs reflects a shifting landscape for them, in which more than a quarter of those questioned said that their commissioning functions had merged with those of other PCTs.
