Residents in Oxfordshire’s care homes need better access to dentistry services, a new report by Healthwatch Oxfordshire has found. They found that those in care homes face many hurdles in obtaining access to a dentist. The watchdog is calling for better access to dental treatment for such residents in their county.

Researchers with the New York Medical College Department of Pharmacology say they have found a link between obesity and periodontitis, after infecting mice with Porphyromonas gingivalis and measuring the resulting inflammation. According to the study, the bacteria worsened the functionality of fat tissue, which has been shown to increase obesity.
Researchers say the bowls depicted on the cereal packaging contain three times more food than the portion size recommended in their nutrition panels. The authors say patients should be made aware of the ’cereal killer’ lurking on their breakfast tables. The Association of Cereal Food Manufacturers said: “Breakfast cereals are an important source of fibre, vitamins and minerals.”
The BDA has claimed that Ministers are creating a ‘hostile environment’ for vulnerable patients to keep costs down. Also there are no signs of a breakthrough on child attendance with 5 million missing out on NHS care. The GDPC Chair Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen said: “Sadly the government has shown no interest in getting hard to reach families to attend, when prevention could save our NHS millions.”

A total of 39.2 million courses of treatment (83.2 million UDAs) were delivered in England in 2017/18 by the NHS according to statistics published by NHS Digital. This was a fall of 1.8% compared with the previous year. 22 million adults (50.7%) and 6.9 million under 18s (58.6%) were seen by 24,306 dentists (84% under the GDS contract).
NHS Digital reports that in 2016/17 there was a 0.7% decrease in taxable income of self-employed dentists in England and Wales, from £69,200 in 2015/16 to £68,700 continuing the downward trend since 2006/07. In Northern Ireland there was a 4.3% decrease from £69,400 to £66,400 in 2016/17. In Scotland there was a 0.1% increase from £67,700 to £67,800.
