The Irish Dental Association (IDA) has urged people to prioritise their oral health and not to ignore dental problems, which could lead to serious problems. The call follows the death of 26-year-old Vadim Kondratyuk Anatoliyevich, who died after a dental infection spread to his lungs. They partly blamed cuts to the Irish dental service.

A report published by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health recognises the impact of poor oral health on a child’s physical health and quality of life. The State of Child Health report 2017 is welcomed by the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) which gives unqualified support to its recommendations.

A new guide has been published by the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry in support of parents of children with autism. The guide covers all aspects of children’s dental health from introducing the child to tooth brushing at home to preparing for dental appointments. Wendy Bellis, a leading authority on the management and treatment of children with autism wrote the content.

Child dental registration rates in Scotland are now above 90% in all areas. Of the 4.9 million people registered only 3.5 million were seen by an NHS dentist in past two years. The BDA’s Robert Donald, of the SGDPC said there are nearly two million Scots who are not getting the NHS dental treatment, “The Scottish government must stop boasting about ‘record breaking’ registration rates.”
The General Dental Council (GDC) has published plans for how its approach to regulating dental professionals will be reformed to put public safety firmly at its heart. NASDAL (The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers) has announced the results of its latest goodwill survey and practice valuations continue on their upward trend. Alan Suggett, who complied the survey, said that perhaps the biggest news of the last month was that MyDentist have withdrawn from buying any dental practices.
