New Birmingham dental school opens for patients

The first patients were welcomed into the new Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry on March 31. Following completion of construction last month, a detailed plan has been implemented to ensure the smooth transition of both staff and equipment from the existing site to its new home in Edgbaston. Professor Phil Lumley, Head of the School of Dentistry said: “The facilities within the new building will be a state-of-the-art new home for our world-class teaching and research, as the next generation of dentists and dental specialists are trained here”.

BDA says contract is failing patients after 10 years

A new survey from British Dental Association (BDA) shows that the payment system at the heart of NHS dentistry is failing patients in the most need. It shows that 93% of dentists say government targets standing in the way of treating patients in most need and leading NHS dentists have called on Prime Minister to put prevention at heart of service after ‘lost decade’

Shocking GDC Case

Two consultant grade dental surgeons are facing erasure from the Dental Register following the performing of ‘Frankensteinian surgical treatment' at an NHS hospital.

In a Fitness to Practice hearing at the General Dental Council, Maxillofacial Surgeon Mr Albert Tatlock, 66, and Orthodontist Mr Kenneth Barlow, 59, are charged with gross professional misconduct following a two year-long investigation.

Hazardous Waste Regulations to change

The BDA has issued advice to its members on changes to the hazardous waste regulations which come into force on April 1, 2016 for practices in England. Two aspects are changing:

You will no longer need to register your premises with the Environment Agency.
The format of the unique consignment note code, which appears on every consignment note, will change.

Large fines handed down to tooth whiteners

A London tooth whitener has been fined £10,000 in a recent case. His actions were aggravated by claiming that he was a registered dentist when he was not. In a separate case a man who works for a company (Pearlys) that specialises in tooth whitening products in South Woodford, east London was fined over £4,300.
