Glasgow named top dental school

The Telegraph has published a list of the top 10 dental schools in the UK, compiled by the Complete University Guide (CUG). Glasgow comes out top, followed by Manchester and Queen Mary, London. The descriptions of the schools have been prepared for prospective students.
1. University of Glasgow
With state of the art facilities available to all students, Glasgow Dental School and Hospital is rated as the top university for dentistry in the UK.
2. University of Manchester
Manchester dentistry combines clinical studies with advanced dental sciences. The course encourages students to pursue independent lines of enquiry and undergraduates gain medical experience in a range of environments. The course’s professors have been described as caring and knowledgeable, no doubt playing a part in the 96 per cent satisfaction rate among students. What is more, 100 per cent of students are in work within 6 months of graduation.
3. Queen Mary, University of London
With the first new dental school in the UK for 40 years, Queen Mary's course offers a modern curriculum and student-focused learning for promotion of oral health, development of professional behavior and dental skills.
4. Newcastle University
Newcastle ranks in the top 25 per cent in the UK for world-class research and 37th in the world for dentistry, according to the QS World University Rankings.
5. King’s College, University of London
King’s College dental school is the largest in the UK and offers the same BDS programme as other universities, but with additional support. First year undergraduates study biomedical sciences, then clinical skills and human disease, with work placements following in the fourth year. Unique to dentistry courses, students have the opportunity to work in a purpose built clinic regularly.
6. University of Cardiff
The only dental school in Wales, the department at the University of Cardiff is described as outstanding and unique, with a 90 per cent overall course satisfaction rate from undergraduates.
7. University of Dundee
Students on Dundee's dentistry course get experience in outreach centres during their fourth year of study, while the university also gives undergraduates the option to study abroad.
8. University of Bristol
With a variety of topics to study, and extensive teaching in clinical skills, the dentistry course at Bristol ranks within the CUG's top 10 in the country. The course has a 93 per cent overall satisfaction rate, while students can also make the most of the area's many attractions, such as Corn Street, with its many independent shops.
9. University of Birmingham
Dentistry at Birmingham has a strong focus on the interaction between oral and general health, while students spend 22 per cent of their time in lectures in the brand new dental hospital (currently being developed). In addition, undergraduates can study a personally tailored module abroad. Undergraduates have plenty of time to study independently. As for the campus, the university is well-known for its beautiful lawns and red brick walls.
10. Queen's University, Belfast
Sixty undergraduates qualify for dentistry at Queen's each year: a course which has been running in Belfast for 96 years. During the fourth and fifth years, emphasis is placed on clinical skills in dentistry , with students given the option to study for an additional year, to achieve an intercalated BSc degree.
