Speaking at the BDA conference in Manchester, health minister Earl Howe reaffirmed the Government's commitment to improving access and better oral health. He paid tribute to the hard work carried out by those involved in the pilots and to the BDA for its input to the process. He said on HTM01-05 that if evidence indicated that changes should be made this would be done. |

Lord Howe stressed the importance of reducing oral health inequalities and addressing the needs of older people, many of whom had extensive restorations, which would need replacing.
There would be new quality standards, but this would be more than a ‘tick box’ exercise. Asked during questions how he would define quality in dentistry, he floundered and repeated what he had said in his speech.
He said that the NHS Commissioning Board would from next April commission in all branches of NHS dentistry,. Putting all contracts in one place would remove many of the inconsistencies found in PCTs.
