Launched at the start of 2012 Brush DJ has already been downloaded in 149 countries and received mainly 5 star reviews in the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Ben said ‘winning the award has been a great honour and made all the work that has gone in to the development of Brush DJ worthwhile’. When asked about plans for the future of the app he reported ‘2013 is going to be very exciting with the launch of a new website, more videos showing how to carry out basic oral hygiene tasks, a version of the app for Blackberry and Windows smartphones.
A recent survey by the British Dental Health Foundation reported nearly 59% of women and 35% of men regularly skip brushing their teeth before going to bed. The government’s latest dental health survey found only 21% of people use dental floss and only 26% use an electric toothbrush. A US study reported that the average time spent brushing is 45 seconds- considerably shorter than the recommended 2 minutes.
The main feature of the Brush DJ app is a timer which plays 2 minutes of music taken at random from the user’s device, which makes the mundane task of brushing for the correct length of time more fun and therefore more likely to happen. The app also contains the evidence based oral health advice given in the Department of Health document ‘Delivering Better Oral Health’. Reminders can be set to prompt twice a day brushing, when to change toothbrushes, visit the dentist and hygienist.
