The wording of the motion was that conference was ‘saddened and dismayed by tragic suicide of dentist who felt harassed and bullied by the NHS. Conference wholeheartedly supports the BDA for independent inquiry and urges Government to make clear that bullying has no place in culture of the NHS’. In his speech Earl Howe said support for dentists was available. Dentists must feel supported and must be able to access support.
On the change over to NHS England from PCTs he urged patience, believing that in the end there would be a more consistent approach. Local Professional Network would be ‘a platform for clinical leadership and focus for quality’. Contact between area teams and LDCs was essential.
He said the Government wanted to get new contract right, even if this meant waiting longer. He was pleased with feedback from the pilots which were showing progress. The second wave was now 90 practices strong. The problem of blocking of appointment books must be addressed and differences in UDA rates must be tackled.
The second emergency motion which was also passed overwhelmingly was that 'Conference deplores the appointment of a non-dentist as the Chair of GDC. We ask the appointments committee to reconsider urgently and to appoint a dentist as Chair of GDC'
