GDC given better end of term report
After three years of adverse reports from its regulator, the General Dental Council (GDC) has shown some improvements especially in its fitness to practise procedures. However the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) found that the GDC had not met one of the nine standards and more is expected of the GDC next year.

The PSA (and its predecessor, the CHRC) has been long concerned about delays in processing complaints with some cases taking over three years to reach resolution. It now says: ‘In our view, while some improvements have been made to progress cases more quickly and prevent blockages in the process, delays remain in some areas of the process. We are particularly concerned about the length of time taken for a decision to be made about an interim order. This demonstrates that the GDC is not yet meeting this standard.’

Otherwise the PSA finds that all other standards have been met: guidance and standards, education and training, registration. There remain some causes for concern, for instance ‘the GDC does not currently have a process requiring registrants to provide assurance that indemnity insurance is in place’. There is also a long list of subjects that the PSA will want to examiner in next year’s review.

The report is available at: http://www.professionalstandards.org.uk/docs/scrutiny-quality/performance-review-report-2012-13.pdf?sfvrsn=0 and the GDC’s response at: http://www.gdc-uk.org/Newsandpublications/Pressreleases/Pages/GDC-performance-review-report-published.aspx
