Always buy from a reputable source says BDTA

The importation and sale of counterfeit medical products is a significant issue for the dental industry and the BDTA urges all buyers to be suspicious of deals that seem “too good to be true”. BDTA President, Terry Porter comments, “The recent repeat of the BBC’s “Fake Britain” programme featuring counterfeit dental equipment serves as a stark reminder for all of us involved in dentistry. I would urge all practices and buyers to purchase through a reputable source and be wary of equipment offered at knock down prices”.

BDTA members are fully aware of the issue and welcome this recent exposure that raises the profile of the dangers of cut-price counterfeit equipment across the profession.

Recognising this risk and the responsibility upon registrants the GDC stated in its recent “Looking Ahead - A Policy Horizon Scanning Report” that, “The fact that the supply chain for dental products has become increasingly globalised with greater uncertainty about the source of some products means that the GDC will continue to re-inforce the message that it is the registrant’s responsibility to ensure that products are safe and effective.”

The message is simple, cheap usually is cheap for a reason and the BDTA recommends that all purchases, however small, are made from a reputable supplier.
