Dentists urged to check curing lights

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is advising dentists across the UK to check their dental curing lights are genuine following the discovery that 261 counterfeit devices have been sold on the internet auction website eBay. The counterfeit devices have not been tested for safety nor efficacy. The MHRA investigation has identified the origin of the units as a company in China that specialises in tattoo equipment.

.

Counterfeit devices can be distinguished, the agency is advising because:

  1. They do not have instructions for use
  2. On the genuine devices the Woodpecker mark is at the top, it is not on the counterfeit ones
  3. The electrical plug supplied with the device is of poor quality.

Any counterfeits should be disposed of using appropriate clinical procedures.

The MHRA can be contacted by telephoning 020 3080 7081 or at: www.mhra.gov.uk

Dr Martin Fallowfield, the Chair of the BDA’s Principal Executive Committee, said: “We urge dentists to check that their curing light devices are genuine. The unapproved, counterfeit devices are likely to mean poor quality treatment for patients and should be destroyed.”
