MHRA warns about counterfeit dental equipment

The MHRA has issued a medical device alert about counterfeit dental devices. This was produced in response to a reported failure of a dental handpiece which disintegrated whilst being used in a patient's mouth, fortunately without any injuries.  The device had been purchased on-line and subsequent investigation elicited that it was counterfeit.

The MHRA says counterfeit or non-CE marked dental medical devices bought online could fail during use with a risk of injury to patient and user. They advise dentists only to buy dental medical devices from a legitimate manufacturer or supplier and only use dental medical devices that have a medical device CE mark. Dentists should also report suspected counterfeit dental medical devices and adverse incidents involving dental medical devices to the MHRA.
