The BDA has announced that, following the EGM on 21st February 2014, PEC members voted to remove Martin Fallowfield from the Chair. A new Chair will be elected by, and come from amongst, the PEC at an election is expected to take place in March, when the Committee meets next. Until a new Chair has been elected, the BDA will be led by the current Deputy Chair of the PEC, Dr Robert Kinloch, a general dental practitioner in Scotland.
Speculation continues as to who will emerge as the new Chair.
The President of the British Dental Association (BDA), Barry McGonigle, took the chair at an Extraordinary General Meeting on February 21. Just under 50 members were present and over 100 proxy votes had been sent in. There was one resolution to amend the articles of the Association, which was overwhelmingly approved. There was no discussion nor questions prior to the vote.
The resolution will allow those holding an office of the Principal Executive Committee (PEC) including the Chair, Deputy Chair and Chair of the Education, Ethics and the Dental Team Working Group to be removed from their posts following a resolution of the PEC carried by a two thirds majority. Under the old articles these office holders had security of tenure.
