The man behind a controversial plan for a crematorium in the USA, Jim Bob Humphrey, has presented his case before the Arkansas Board of Dental Examiners to remove mercury fillings from teeth before cremation. The crematorium Humphrey is wanting to build would be adjacent to a school and parents are worried about a possible health hazard from the fillings emitting mercury into the air.
After hearing from Humphrey, the Dental Board discussed if the act of removing amalgam dental fillings from the deceased falls under the practice of dentistry. “As we listened to the board today they said quite clearly if they decide that this is practicing dentistry we would need to hire a dentist to do it and we are well prepared to do that,” said Humphrey.
But, the board isn't clear if the practice of dentistry is the same for someone, dead or alive. The board requested more time to gather information before they make a final decision, and the embalmers board won't give Humphrey a permit until the dental board approves. Humphrey will appear before the embalmers board next month to update them on the status of his request.
