Dentist shown red card over offensive emails

A Bedford dentist has been erased by the General Dental Council (GDC) following a public hearing into allegations of misconduct. The allegations against Abiodun Olayinka  Bamgbelu included sending numerous emails and letters to three members of staff at the GDC that were abusive/emotionally abusive, and/or offensive and/or threatening and using similar behaviour towards staff at the Oxford Deanery.

The charges Abiodun Olayinka  Bamgbelu faced included:

  1. That between September 2013 and April 2014, Mr Bamgbelu sent numerous emails and letters to three members of staff at the GDC that were abusive/emotionally abusive, and/or offensive and/or threatening, including:
    (i) referring to nationality, race or ethnicity;
    (ii) using sexual language or content;
  2. That on 31 March 2014, he did communicate by email with a member of staff at the Oxford Deanery and made one or more abusive and/or offensive comments referring to nationality, race or ethnicity and using sexually offensive language;
  3. That at an Interim Orders Committee [hearing] on 10 April 2014, he did provide a copy of an email from Capsticks Solicitors that was incomplete and/or inaccurate from the original email with some words removed or underlined that had not been in the original email;
  4. That he failed to co-operate with the GDC's investigation into his fitness to practise by failing to undergo a health assessment/medical examination, despite numerous requests to do so.

In considering this case, the GDC's Professional Conduct Committee said: "Mr Bamgbelu's inappropriate communications were persistent, offensive, disproportionate to the requests made of him and on occasion contained extreme graphic and sexual language. The Committee considered them to be beyond what is reasonably expected in correspondence to a regulator from a registered dental professional. Mr Bamgbelu has displayed contempt for the regulatory process which is designed to keep patients safe. He has also demonstrated a complete lack of insight into his behaviour."
