The on-going police investigation into the thefts at 2014’s BDIA Showcase has resulted in the Metropolitan Police force releasing photos of the suspects. Around £130,000 worth of handpieces were taken from the NSK and Bien-Air stands on the evening of Thursday 9 October, after the show had closed to dental professionals.
The search for the suspects has travelled overseas as it is suspected they have links with Romania and Italy. Upon examination of the CCTV, the order of events were as follows: two suspects were seen taking products from the stands at around 6.23pm. Later, the footage shows the suspects getting into a hire car that was registered to a company in the Midlands. The police has since traced their names to Romania and Italy and are waiting to hear news from the countries’ police forces.
Bien-Air had around £80-90,000 of products stolen and NSK lost stock to the sum of about £40-£50,000. CCTV showed Bien-Air’s on stand store cupboard being broken into and NSK’s glass cabinets being forced open.
Fiona Breitenbach from NSK said: “We are at a bit of a stale mate at the moment because we are waiting to hear more information. The suspects were just hiding in the hall waiting for people to leave. The footage shows someone doing our IT going back to our stand and the suspects are seen hiding, which is so frustrating. I think in future we will not be leaving the stand until we are told the hall is clear.”
