Approximately 700 dental practices, across 21 Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are moving to a new Dental Electronic Referral Service (DERS) in the coming months. NHS England have recently contracted with Vantage Diagnostics Ltd, a UK leading provider of electronic referral management. The first tranche of dentists will be using the new service before the end of the year.
Annie Godden, Contracts Manager for dental services in NHS England South – (South East) across Kent, Surrey and Sussex said: “Having made the decision to move away from a mainly manual referral and triage service, we decided to look at fully digital offerings. We decided that the combinations of improved patient service, consistency and costs saving made this an attractive choice. We have involved our dentists and secondary care consultants along with Public Health England (PHE) and have been pleased that they have worked well with Vantage to develop referral pathways specific to our needs.”
David Ezra from Vantage stated: “We are proud to be working with in NHS England South – (South East) across Kent, Surrey and Sussex and that the value of a fully digital referral service has been recognised as superior in both quality and value-for-money to manual services.”
The new service has allowed in NHS England South – (South East) across Kent, Surrey and Sussex to transition from existing manual processes making significant improvements. New referrals will be processed in days rather than weeks that mean that patients will receive appropriate treatment much quicker.
Feedback from the Local Dental Committee (LDC) in Kent, the first phase of the roll-out, has been enthusiastic. Local dentist and secretary of the LDC, Julian Unter stated: “We are very excited about this new approach to referral management and all that it means to patient safety and convenience.
