NHS dentistry receives lowest number of complaints

Figures releases by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (www.hscic.gov.uk) for NHS complaints in 2014-15 show that fewer than 4% of the total were dental. Within primary care only 9% of the 84,500 written complaints received were about dentists. Only 37.5% of complaints in primary care were upheld.

The total of all reported written complaints in the NHS in 2014-15 amounted to 205,000. This is the equivalent of more than 3,900 written complaints a week and equivalent to 562 per day.  

The total number of all reported Family Health Services (including GPs and dental) written complaints in 2014-15 was 84,500. The highest percentage of written complaints concerned the Medical service area; 41.7% or 35,276 complaints. The service area with the second highest percentage of written complaints at 37.0% (31,281) concerned Practice administration. Complaints labelled Dental amounted to 7,754.

The figures show that 45.7% of all NHS Written Complaints were fully or partially upheld. This varied by the two separate areas from 51.4% for Hospital and Community Health Services to 37.5% for Family Health Services.
