The FGDP(UK) has supported a recent report which highlighted the detrimental overuse of antibiotics, the dangers of inappropriate use, and what steps can be taken to keep them working. Dean, Mick Horton said that their evidence based guidance set out sensible protocols for dental practitioners when considering the need to prescribe antimicrobials.
The FGDP(UK) supports a report by the Centre for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy in Washington DC, published this week in the Lancet, which highlights the detrimental overuse of antibiotics, the dangers of inappropriate use, and what steps can be taken to keep them working.
Antibiotics underpin modern medicine and dentistry and many treatments and procedures, such as chemotherapy, transplants and joint replacements, rely on them. However, the number of infections treatable by antibiotics is decreasing due to antimicrobial resistance and there is a significant global public health risk if we continue to prescribe at the current rate.
The FGDP(UK)’s guideline Antimicrobial Prescribing For General Dental Practitioners provides evidence based guidance for prudent prescribing and antimicrobial stewardship for dental conditions and remains a key theme of the Faculty’s work.
FGDP(UK) Dean, Mick Horton said “The FGDP(UK)’s evidence based guidance sets out sensible protocols for dental practitioners when considering the need to prescribe antimicrobials. It is vital that dental practitioners recognise their role in helping to reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance .”
