England and Wales: drop in GDP earnings in 2014/15

In England and Wales during 2014/15 there was a drop in taxable income for GDPs continuing the general trend since 2006/07. Their average taxable income was £70,500, a 1.6 per cent decrease on £71,700 in 2013/14. For contract holders net income was £117,400. For associates it was £59,900.
Dentists holding an NHS contract (Contract Holders) had higher gross earnings, total expenses and taxable income than Associate dentists across all contract types, in keeping with previous years. 82% of GDPs are associates. The term Contract Holders does not include Corporates. The figures do not include those working only in private practice.
Contract Holders
In 2014/15 they had average taxable income from NHS and private dentistry of £117,400, compared to £115,200 in 2013/14, a 1.8% increase. 2013/14 had also shown an increase on 2012/13 which differs from the trend of the previous six years (2006/07 to 2011/12) which showed a continuous decrease from £134,800 in 2006/07.
Average gross earnings from NHS and private dentistry were £385,600 in 2014/15, compared to £375,000 in 2013/14 for Contract Holders.
Average total expenses from NHS and private dentistry were £268,300, compared to £259,800 in 2013/14. These figures include any clawback applied.
Associates
In 2014/15 average taxable income from NHS and private dentistry was £59,900, compared to £60,600 in 2013/14, a 1.1% fall.
Average gross earnings from NHS and private dentistry were £99,800, compared to £99,000 in 2013/14.
Average total expenses from NHS and private dentistry were £39,900, compared to £38,500 in 2013/14.
Associate dentists are continuing to see decreasing taxable income year on year; whilst gross earnings are increasing, total expenses are also increasing at a higher rate.
