New toothbrush to be launched

A new automatic toothbrush, which it is claimed takes only 10 seconds to clean patients’ teeth and remove plaque is due to be launched later this year. The Amabrush, which looks like a bristly mouth guard, can dispense toothpaste and vibrates to clean every tooth, according to its creators. It does not appear, however, if there are any scientific studies to verify the claims.

Amabrush's creators said the device is made from bacteria-resistant silicone and features 3D bristles on both sides. The material is soft enough to prevent gum disease but hard enough to clean your teeth, according to inventors. They added that because the material is flexible, one size can fit the mouths of both men and women.

To use the device, customers merely put the toothbrush in their mouth and press a button to start the cleaning process. The system uses bespoke toothpaste capsules which cost £2.60 ($3.40) and last around one month.

The device sends out strong vibrations with an amplitude of 9.5G and uses an algorithm to vary the waves of vibrations. 'Even in 10 seconds, every tooth surface is cleaned longer compared with common toothbrushes,' the makers claimed on Kickstarter. 'If you brush your teeth for the recommended 120 seconds with a regular toothbrush, every surface gets brushed for just 1.25 seconds. Amabrush brushes all your surfaces for the whole 10 seconds.'

The toothbrush will need to be replaced every two to three months for it to keep being effective, according to the creators. The device and charger cost around £70 ($90) and will be available in December.
