A private dental practice in Cheltenham has closed after being labelled as unsafe by the CQC. Patients arriving at the surgery found a handwritten notice on the front door saying that it is closed “due to unforeseen circumstances”. Those telephoning have been told that it is “temporarily closed”.
It comes after the Care Quality Commission published a report, saying the surgery was not safe and not well led. They said: “We found this practice was not providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.” They added: “We found this practice was not providing well-led care in accordance with the relevant regulations. The provider had made insufficient improvements to put right the shortfalls and had not dealt with the regulatory breaches we found at our inspection on February 10 2017.”
The report said the surgery must send the CQC a report saying what action it would take to meet its requirements. The CQC said: “The equipment being used to care for and treat service users was not safe for use. In particular, there was no regular servicing or regulation testing of the autoclave, compressor, or X-ray equipment.”
Other criticism included the surgery not having fully effective systems in place to assess, monitor and mitigate the risks relating to the health, safety and welfare of patients. Staff were not getting appropriate support, training, professional development, supervision and appraisal, the report said.
