The Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) has awarded eight Fellowships. Mick Horton, Dermot McNulty, John Milne and Jonathan Rees have been elected to the Fellowship in recognition of their exceptional career records and active support of the Faculty. Janet Goodwin and John Deer have received Honorary Fellowship, with Ralph Pickup and Vincent Syme receiving the Diploma of Fellowship.
John Milne has worked in general dental practice for almost forty years, and practises near Wakefield. A former Chair of the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee, since 2015 he has been the Senior National Dental Adviser to the Care Quality Commission, where he has been instrumental in developing the new model of dental practice inspections. He also contributed to the development of FGDP’s Dementia-Friendly Dentistry guidance, and is working to ensure that national oral health guidelines are met in care homes.
Also elected to Fellowship was Mick Horton, a practising GDP in North Wales and Immediate Past Dean of the Faculty. Dr Horton is a Postgraduate Tutor for Quality Improvement, sits on the Welsh Dental Committee and a number of other local and national committees. He has a special interest in patient safety and the opportunities for dentistry to learn from significant events. His term of office as Dean saw the initiation of the process to establish an independent College of General Dentistry.
Dermot McNulty is Chair of the Management Board of the FGDP(UK) Diploma in Implant Dentistry. Practising in Bath, he has been placing and maintaining dental implants for over thirty years, is an elected Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and was a founder member of the Association of Dental Implantology.
A specialist in oral surgery, Jonathan Rees is an examiner, appraiser and tutor in implant dentistry for the FGDP(UK) as well as for RCS Edinburgh and the University of Manchester, where as a Senior Clinical Fellow he teaches surgery and implant dentistry to Master’s students. He also holds FGDP(UK)’s Advanced Certificate in Implant Dentistry and Diploma in Dental Appraisal.
Janet Goodwin and John Deer have received Honorary Fellowship, which is bestowed on those who have made an exceptional contribution to the profession. A dental nurse and Affiliate Member of FGDP(UK), Janet Goodwin’s work in the dental profession since 1971 has encompassed general practice, community practice, dental hospital and further education, and she has long served the Faculty as a representative of the interests of the wider dental team
John Deer co-founded Renishaw, one of the world’s leading engineering and scientific technology firms, in 1973. The company has provided technology for market-leading model scanners, enabling CAD/CAM milling of prostheses to 3D digital design, and additive manufacture for the printing of bridges, implant frameworks and maxillofacial prosthetics
Ralph Pickup and Vincent Syme have received the Diploma of Fellowship, which recognises the diversity of an individual’s expertise and their achievements in delivering excellence in primary dental care. After working in hospital and general practice in Newcastle, Ralph Pickup now practises in Clitheroe. He holds postgraduate diplomas in his special interest areas of endodontics and conscious sedation, and is also involved in the restoration of dental implants.
A GDP in Taunton, Vincent Syme specialises in treating older adults and anxious patients. He has a Master’s degree in Gerodontology and has carried out postgraduate study in a range of subjects including periodontology, dentistry for anxious patients, counselling and facial aesthetics.
