Deputy CDO updates Covid-19 advice for dental teams

Deputy Chief Dental Officer, Eric Rooney, has issued a letter to dentists and their teams to update them on what is happening, to share some key resources and ‘how we plan to communicate with you’. He says that as part of their preparedness plans, they ‘will continue to develop advice and plans to support dental practices’. He gives the example of guidance on face mask supply set out in the letter.

The Deputy CDO says: “This is the first of a series of regular updates to general dental practices and community dental services regarding the emerging COVID-19 situation.” He says he recognises that COVID-19 is placing a new and increasing challenge on already busy practices, and that this will be ‘an area of concern for you, your teams and your patients’.

He said he would like to reassure dentists that ‘we are continually refining our plans for this outbreak, working with our key partners, and drawing on lessons learned from previous incidents and listening to feedback received on emerging COVID-19 issues’. A link to the letter[i] is below.

Prime Minister statement (March 9)

Yesterday (March 9) the Prime Minister told a press conference: “There have now been four deaths from coronavirus in the UK, and our deepest sympathies are obviously with their friends and families. Our action plan as you know sets out the four phases of our approach to tackling the virus: Contain, Delay, Research, and Mitigate.

“We remain in the Contain phase of the outbreak, but watching what is happening around the world, our scientists think containment is extremely unlikely to work on its own, and that is why we are making extensive preparations for a move to the delay phase.

“We are preparing various actions to slow the spread of this disease in order to reduce the strain it places on the NHS. The more we can delay the peak of the spread to the summer, the better the NHS will be able to manage.”

Did he say anything at all? This message is so packing in substance as to be offensive to the workforce.
