COVID-19: Update: BDIA launches new COVID-19 ‘return to practice’ products website

The British Dental Industry Association (BDIA) has launched a new online directory of members’ products and services that will allow dental practices to safely provide the best possible oral care to patients under challenging circumstances. The BDA has recently been the victim of a serious cyber attack, so it is currently impossible to keep up to date with Covid-19 developments from their website.

BDIA launches new COVID-19 ‘return to practice’ products website

As part of the dental industry’s ongoing support of the resumption of widespread dental treatment the British Dental Industry Association (BDIA) has launched a new online directory of members’ products and services that will allow dental practices to safely provide the best possible oral care to patients under challenging circumstances.

To make life a bit simpler the new BDIA online initiative has grouped its members’ products and services together into 13 key categories, covering the things that are most important to the resumption of activity and ongoing provision of treatment, such as PPE.

BDIA Chief Executive, Edmund Proffitt comments, ‘With the concerns over counterfeit and non-compliant Personnel Protective Equipment and all today’s challenges requiring practices to look at products and technologies to provide safe and effective care, it is more important than ever that purchases are made from suppliers that dental professionals can trust, such as BDIA members. I would urge all purchasers of dental equipment to have a look at our new website, and when they think supplier, think BDIA member’.

A user can simply choose a BDIA member from the list of suppliers of equipment and services and browse a full list of products available from that member. If they wish to purchase any products a direct URL will take the user to the supplier’s website where they can purchase the item.

Northern Ireland

In a debate on rebuilding services at the Northern Ireland Assembly on July 28, SDLP member Colin McGrath asked the Minister to meet the BDA and to address the ‘serious impact on dental practices’ at the moment as a result of the regulations. He said: “There is a threat to the viability of practices going forward.”

UUP Minister Robin Swann replied that he had met the BDA and the acting Chief Dental Officer two or three weeks ago. He understood the pressures that our dental profession is under. He continued: “The acting Chief Dental Officer is due to meet the BDA and engage with them in regard to a number of funding packages around additional money that is there in support for other industries and service providers that have fallen through the gaps.”

He had also written to the Minister for the Economy to see whether there is some sort of support mechanism that she could bring forward to the private side of our dental profession. “Where we can support and fund the national health side, there is also that private side of many BDA businesses that need additional support.”

Covid-19 will have “major impact” on £700m medico-legal market

According to a report in litigationfutures, the medico-legal and insurance services (MLIS) market had an estimated turnover of £700m last year but the coronavirus will have a “major impact”. Research indicates that among the challenges it faced as a result of the virus were fewer doctors available to write expert witness reports, while obtaining medical records was becoming “in some instances impossible”.

“Many MLIS businesses are likely to come out of the current lockdown with reduced cash resources and a backlog of work to complete. But they are also likely to face a potential drop in referrals because of a decline in personal injury and other claims over the lockdown period,” the article said.
