Newly released General Dental Council figures have shown a substantial number of dentists have not renewed their registrations for 2021.
In December 2020, 43,007 dentists were registered with the GDC in total. The latest figures, which may be adjusted over the next few weeks, show that 1,112 dentists dropped off the register. This compares with only 23 dentists who left the register in January 2020.
While the GDC provides no breakdown of reasons for failure to register, there is speculation that dentists may have taken early retirement as a result of working difficulties caused by the pandemic. Dentist registrations have now fallen below the December 2018 number of 42,088, to 41,895.
But figures released to GDPUK by the GDC showed that on the 6th January, 307 dentists were removed from the register because of retirement. Although this figure was higher than in 2020 (210), the number was significantly lower than in 2019 and 2018. The GDC pointed out that the figures which were totalled on January 6th are only a snapshot and may change over time.
The new figures represent a 2.58% drop in dentist registrations compared to 6.6% of DCP’s who failed to re-register in July of this year. A total of 3,670 DCP’s dropped off the register in 2020. At that time, criticism was levelled at the GDC for failing to introduce a payment by instalment scheme to help hard-pressed registrants who faced financial difficulties during the pandemic.
A loss of 1,112 dentists from the register represents a substantial loss of GDC income, totalling £756,160.
