A UK dentist has launched a smartphone game app which he hopes will educate youngsters and parents into gaining a better understanding of caries.
Dr Danasagaran Athimoolam, a dental officer based in Bodmin, has developed the free app called Rate of Decay which is aimed primarily at children to create awareness about dental decay and prevention.
Known as ‘Dr Buds,’ he developed the game with a specialist team of game developers.
The game opens with a knowledge board of facts about tooth decay and has multiple choice questions which a youngster can answer either independently or as part of the game.
The game is simple to follow for young children and its hoped that parents, carers and teachers will also benefit from the game while helping youngsters with the multiple choice questions.
Dr Buds told the British Dental Journal that he was inspired by his own experiences of treating patients. He self-funded the venture in order to raise awareness and improve the dental health of children worldwide.
The dental officer is keen to receive feedback from dental professionals. He can be contacted at his website www.rateofdecay.co.uk.
GDPUK enlisted the help of a seasoned gamer to try out Rate of Decay. Thirteen year-old Rupert Forbes-George (pictured using the app) found the game entertaining. He said “The graphics and gaming was very good, though I struggled to answer a couple of the questions about bacteria.”
The app is free to download and play up to three levels.
There will be a small fee for higher levels of the game. Generated profits will be used to promote greater awareness of the ’Rate of Decay’ app, and the importance of oral health generally in both schools and online.
