A former dentist had been elected as the new leader of the Scottish Labour Party
Anas Sarwar, a graduate of Glasgow Dental School replaces Richard Leonard, who led the SLP for three years.
Mr Sarward, who is 37, worked in Paisley as a dentist until being elected as Member of Parliament for Glasgow Central at the 2010 general election.
In 2019 he told Scottish Dental Magazine “ It can often feel that dentistry is the lost specialty. Individual oral health issues are increasingly gaining traction in the political arena, but oral health as a key area of healthcare practice is still conspicuous by its absence in governments’ long-term healthcare policy in most UK nations, and funding for dental services continues to fall.”
The new Scottish Labour leader is married to Furheen, who works as an NHS dentist in East Renfrewshire. The couple have three young children.
