{my}dentist, Europe’s largest dental group, may be on the cusp of merging three Middlesbrough based practices into one ‘super’ one.
According to a report in Teeside Live, the group wants to close its surgeries at Martonside, Newlands and Ormesby and open a new practice at Cleveland Retail Park. The media added that the Newlands practice is at risk of closure as it only hosts one dentist whilst several staff at the Ormesby practice joined on the understanding that the clinic would be relocating and expanding.
If the plans go ahead, an investment of £1.5M will be made to construct a twelve surgeries practice with the capacity to up this to fourteen. Another immediate benefit of the new build is the purpose designed layout and the latest equipment practice wide.
The location, sandwiched between a ‘Next’ and a ‘ShoeZone’ store, has immediate and obvious attractions. Staff will enjoy a more vibrant environment, with lunchtime and afterwork shopping on the doorstep. Patients too will reap the advantage of plentiful and free parking coupled with the attraction of shops and eateries to wander round before and after their dental visits.
{my}dentist has signalled that the new practice will open 50 hours a week, an average increase of almost ten hours compared to its existing practices.
Although for some patients there will be the inconvenience of having to travel further to see their dentist, many will gain and the plans have received a generally warm welcome. Local MP Andy McDonald is seeking reassurances about public transport access whilst Cllr Donna Jones chair of the Scrutiny Panel labelled the initiative ‘fantastic’.
If the plans pass the NHS assessment it is hoped that {my}dentist’s new Middlesbrough practice will open to patients in around eighteen months.
