The GDC’s 2023 ARF has been set at £690 for dentists (an increase of 1.5%) and £114 for dental professionals – the same as last year.
The new fees were announced by the GDC on Friday 21st October. The GDC conceded that the fees had been set in a climate of ‘considerable uncertainty’.
Trumpeting its below inflation rise of 1.5% for dentists, the GDC’s announcement stated that the rise was “far below the 10.1% rate of inflation” and lower than when the GDC consulted the profession in the summer.
“We were able to achieve the lower-than-expected rates by tightly managing our costs and absorbing were possible, the impacts of inflation, as we committed to doing when we set out our expenditure plans” the GDC’s press release stated.
Lord Toby Harris, the GDC Chair, said “We have statutory duties and so, to ensure these are fulfilled, we must be financially viable. But that is not the only reason we must continue to operate – I believe dental professionals gain great benefit from regulation as it’s one of the things that underpins the reputation of the profession as a whole”.
The GDC’s Chief Executive and Registrar Ian Brack said “it’s essential that we manage financial risks – particularly those relating to inflation. We’re confident that our expenditure plans will ensure we are able to fulfil our primary role of maintaining patient safety and public confidence.
Striking a note of realism Brack added “While we will continue to aggressively manage costs – we may need to increase the level of the fee in future. Any such increase will, at most, be in line with the rate of inflation at the time, or as a result of other exceptional and unanticipated circumstances”.
