The British Dental Association (BDA) has called upon all dentists to sign an ‘Open Letter’ to Health Secretary Steve Barclay, urging him to ‘take forward the core recommendations outlined in the Health and Social Care Committee’s report on NHS Dentistry published on 14th July.
The Report described a dental service in total disarray, unable to meet the basic needs of the public who fund it, many of them desperate for access.
The paucity of workforce data was so wanting that the profession’s lords and masters didn’t even know how many dentists were allocating how much time to NHS work in order arrive at an informative overview of activity.
Several constructive proposals for reform were outlined in the Report, many of them originating from within the profession and, in particular, the BDA.
The BDA’s open letter calls for a decisive break with the failed 2006 contract. In its place the BDA says there needs to be ‘a model that is patient-centred and prevention-focused, that ensures the patients who need us most are no longer the least welcome.
‘NHS dentistry faces an existential threat’ the letter to Mr Barclay concludes. ‘To save this service we need you to act now.’

Signing BDA letter
I hope many colleagues will make the simple effort to sign this letter.I know from past experience it is always difficult to get the exact wording or all the points that would 100% satisfy us individually, as we all see multiple failings in the system.
But in principle, the overall message of NHS Dentistry systemic failure, simply cannot be stated enough publicly and to Ministers !!
On that basis, we should all support all such efforts, in the public interest, to make clear only central control can make the BIG changes needed nationally.
Their choice not to do so, repeatedly for over a decade, is totally their responsibility, for all the worsening consequences.
Yours also clearly,
Tony.
