GDC's Chief Executive Ian Brack Steps Down

GDC’s Chief Executive Ian Brack Steps Down

Ian Brack, Chief Executive and Registrar of the General Dental Council, is to step down.  The move will take effect on November 6th.

Gurvinder Soomal, Chief Operating Officer, will act as ’Interim Chief Executive’ until a new CEO and Registrar is appointed.

Mr Brack has occupied the post for almost eight years.  He joined the GDC as Interim CEO in January 2016.

In its statement announcing the move, the GDC said ’Under his leadership the organisation has changed almost beyond recognition, and Ian Brack is leaving having placed the GDC on a sound financial footing and implemented a strong culture of planning and operational delivery’.

The statement continued  ’The Council is soon to confirm the budget and Annual Retention Fee (ARF) for next year, along with the Costed Corporate Plan for 2024-2026. Having these important decisions settled will be a good point to recruit a new CEO to take our priorities into the future.’

Before his stint as Chief Executive and Registrar of the GDC, Mr Brack’s career included an eleven month’s spell as Interim Chief Executive at the Office for Legal Complaints.

He also spent three years as CEO of the Olympic Lottery Distributor, where he was responsible for £1.8b of lottery funding to the Olympics, Paralympics and Cultural Olympiad.

Earlier this year Mr Brack appeared before the House of Commons’ Health & Social Care Committee Inquiry into NHS dentistry where he was forced to admit that his office held no information on how much time or work dentists delivered.  All he could confirm was the number of registrants.

The frank admission took MPs by surprise and set ’lack of workforce data’ as an issue at the heart of the dental access crisis.

Lord Toby Harris who is Chair of the GDC said of his soon-to-depart colleague  “I would like to take the opportunity to say that my colleagues on the Council and I have very much enjoyed working with Ian over the years and are grateful for the significant contribution he has made to the GDC.

I am personally grateful to him for helping me to settle into the role after my appointment as Chair. Both I and my colleagues on the Council wish Ian the very best for the future, and we look forward to working with Gurvinder as interim CEO.”
