A petition to ’Save NHS Dentistry and Make It Fit For The 21st Century’ has attracted over 199,000 of its target 200,000 signatures (at the time of publishing on 12th March).
Sponsored by Liverpool Hospital Consultant and former dental practice owner Tom Thayer, the Mirror and the British Dental Association, the petition is demanding ’proper funding’ for NHS dentistry ’so that all can use it’ and the ’scrapping of the failed contract’ to pave the way for a rebuilt service with ’prevention at its heart’.
In his covering cri de coeur Mr Thayer, Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Oral Surgery, University of Liverpool Dental School says "I treat patients left with horrifying mouth injuries after trying to pull their own teeth out. Everyone who needs an NHS dentist should be able to get an appointment.
"Day in, day out my colleagues are seeing scenes that belong in the Victorian era. Simply because they can’t get an NHS appointment.
None of this is inevitable. This is a wealthy 21st-century nation. This is all the result of choices made in Westminster."
According to the Mirror, Mr Thayer ’is responsible for dealing with the most complex oral health problems now swamping the NHS. A dentist for 43 years, he retired in 2019 before returning to the frontline shortly before the Covid-19 crisis.
As well as people ripping their teeth out – leaving shards of roots in their pus-filled gums – he has treated patients who had superglued crowns back on and says clinics are sending patients for overdose testing as they have taken too many painkillers.

Dentists and patients.
All failed by a broken system.
Tomorrow the Government will be held to account on NHS dentistry.
Their broken promises are hurting millions. https://t.co/2FfPt0VagG pic.twitter.com/J5aWjn5Q62
