With the increased media interest in Dentistry, Shawn Charlwood became a familiar sight, and source of quotes, about the dire state of NHS general dental practice. His comparison of the long bedraggled queues of people hoping to get scarce dental appointments, with those outside eastern bloc bakeries in the Soviet era, hit home, and has been copied in the national press.
As part of the periodic changes to BDA committees, there is now a new face as Chair of the BDA General Dental Practice Committee (GDPC), Shiv Pabary MBE. The GDPC acts as GDP’s representative group, and negotiates with Government and other stakeholders on behalf of them.
It is the only official representative body recognised by the Government in negotiations and consultations.

Today dentists descended on London.

NHS care cannot be decoupled.

Handing over the baton, former Chair Shawn Charlwood said: “I am sad to end my term, but proud of what we’ve achieved. We put the crisis facing NHS dentistry at the top of the agenda. We have a clear plan to fix it. We just need to see the political will, and a change in tone from HM Treasury. The profession is in good hands with Shiv Pabary and his new team.”
Shiv Pabary brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He is a graduate of Newcastle University who is an honorary lecturer, dental practice adviser and postgraduate tutor. He was awarded the MBE in the 2009 Queens New Years Honours List for services to dentistry in the North East of England.
As a provider and practice owner associate with 6 dental practices since 2004, and current provider and partner within 2 orthodontic contracts he will be able to bring an authentic view of GDP life to discussions and negotiations,
He has wasted no time in continuing the BDA’s attempts to put pressure on the government. As the BDA issued its press release to mark the start of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) inquiry into Fixing NHS Dentistry Inquiry, he said:
“Government says it’s ‘going for growth’, but Treasury policy is doing the exact opposite for dental care. The coming spending review will either sink or save NHS dentistry. Rachel Reeves doesn’t want to see her signature on the death warrant of a service millions depend on.”
There have also been changes in Scotland. Glasgow GDP David McColl, former chair of the Scottish Dental Practice Committee (SDPC) has handed over to Gillian Lennox, who was elected for a three year term. Gillian is a GDP, a practice parrtner in Stenhousemuir. Gillian said she was "very honoured", and "has big shoes to fill"
