Judges for student essay competition announced

The key names on the judging panel include:
  • Dr Mike Warburton Mike was the National Director of the Dental Access Programme for the Department of Health until March 2011 and was actively involved in improving access to NHS dentistry.
  • Prof Jimmy Steele Jimmy is Head of School and Professor of Oral Health Services Research at Newcastle and an Honorary NHS Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust He undertook an independent review of NHS dental services in England in June 2009 and was one of the lead authors on the ADHS.
  • Prof Deborah White Deborah is Director of Education and Head of Dental Public Health at the School of Dentistry at the University of Birmingham and vice chair of the BDA’s Central Committee for Dental Academic Staff.
  • Prof Trevor Burke Trevor co-ordinates two practice-based research groups, the PREP Panel and BRIDGE and is Editorial Director of Dental Update and Chair of the Board of Dental Protection
  • Mr Tony Reed Tony has held the role of Executive Director at the British Dental Trade Association for the past 14 years and is a member of the British Dental Editors Forum.
3rd and 4th year BDS clinical students are being invited to enter the competition by writing an article based on the findings of the recently published ADHS. The panel will review the entries in August and the writer of the winning entry will be awarded £500. The article will be published in Dental Update, online and potentially in the wider media.

Tony Reed, Executive Director at the BDTA comments, “This is a fantastic opportunity for dental students to display their writing talents and gain exposure in the dental press, whilst promoting the benefits of visiting the dentist to the public. I’m delighted be part of the judging panel with such well recognised names from the industry and look forward to reviewing the submissions in the Summer.”
