First students for medicine and dentistry at Plymouth

Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry welcomed its first cohorts of medical and dental students on 16th September. In all, 64 students have enrolled for dentistry. The Bachelor of Dental Surgery is now a five-year A-level entry course. Students will experience training which will see them treating NHS patients from a very stage.

BDA to make staff redundant

Last Monday the BDA sent its staff a consultation letter as the first stage in making widespread redundancies. GDPUK believes this has been brought about as a result of the new three-tier membership system introduced in June. Overwhelmingly members have chosen the cheapest option, causing a substantial reduction in subscription income allegedly amounting to millions of pounds.

Large new laboratory opens in Leeds

The managing director of Genix Healthcare, Mustafa Mohammed, is investing £1m in a new facility in Leeds to offer manufacturing and training facilities and job opportunities for 200, including apprentices. With many practices now outsourcing their lab work to overseas laboratories, the British dental technician trade has taken a sharp decline in recent years. The new facility Sparkle Dental Laboratories Ltd  is looking to change this.

The BDTA was delighted with the success of the UK Pavilion at the 101st FDI Annual World Dental Congress Exhibition held in Istanbul, Turkey on 28 to 31August. All the UK exporters based on the BDTA organised UK national pavilion were very satisfied with what they achieved at the event and happy to be part of the distinctive UK Pavilion.

Link found between Alzheimer's disease and poor dental health

People with poor oral hygiene could be at higher risk of developing Alzheimer's compared with those who have healthy mouths, according to recent research from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). The presence of porphyromonas gingivalis in the brains of patients who had dementia when they were alive. The bacterium is usually associated with chronic periodontal disease.

None of ‘usual suspects’ wants to replace Nicholson

In an interview with Health Service Journal, Sir Malcolm Grant, NHS England chair, has revealed that all of NHS England’s current national directors have ruled themselves out of replacing Sir David Nicholson. He also said he will consider people ‘from outside the UK and with no health service experience as candidates to be the organisation’s chief executive.’
