Dentists urged to check curing lights

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is advising dentists across the UK to check their dental curing lights are genuine following the discovery that 261 counterfeit devices have been sold on the internet auction website eBay. The counterfeit devices have not been tested for safety nor efficacy. The MHRA investigation has identified the origin of the units as a company in China that specialises in tattoo equipment.

GDC prosectutes unregistered Oxford dentist

The General Dental Council (GDC), has successfully prosecuted a woman for the illegal practice of dentistry and the unlawful use of the title Dentist. Claire Williams of Chinnor in Oxfordshire, was fined £1,000, ordered to pay full GDC costs of £1559.15 and a £100 victim surcharge.

Man pleads guilty to practising dentistry illegally

The GDC has assisted the Metropolitan Police to successfully prosecute a man for unlawfully practising dentistry. On Friday 25 October 2013 Young Jun Suh appeared at Hammersmith Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to unlawfully practising dentistry. He was fined £1000, ordered to pay a £100 victim surcharge and £85 towards costs.

Small decrease in NHS patients seen

The number of NHS patients seen in the 24 month period ending June 2013 was 29.8, 11 thousand fewer than the period ending March 2013, according to the latest figures from the Information Centre. The number of Courses of Treatment, delivered in 2012/13, was 249 thousand than the previous year. More fluoride varnishes are being applied. 281 more dentists were working in the NHS. 80% of dentists are associates.

Coroner says CQC inspection not fit for purpose

The West Sussex coroner, Penelope Schofield, has ruled that neglect contributed to five of the deaths, at Orchid View in Copthorne, near Crawley. She said the home, then run by Southern Cross, was "mismanaged and understaffed". Ms Schofield also criticised the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which gave the home a "good" rating in 2010, a year before it closed down.

Showcase reports another successful year

Showcase reports another successful year

Another successful BDTA Dental Showcase took place at Birmingham’s NEC on 17-19 October. Some 12,000 came to the exhibition. Delegates interacted with over 380 leading dental companies. Tony Reed, Executive Director of the BDTA commented: “I recognise that it’s a challenging market so I’m very pleased with the response to this year’s event”.
