Americans have poor knowledge of oral health

A new survey from the American Dental Association (ADA) shows that Americans seriously need to clean up their act when it comes to oral health. The survey shows that Americans' average score was a 'D' in the survey's range of 'true or false' questions, which included questions like how often should teeth be cleaned, what causes cavities and the age of a child's first dentist visit.

Patient fraud costs NHS £110m in Scotland

Thousands of patients have been caught conning the NHS in Scotland and the number is rising every year. New figures revealed more than 15,000 cases where patients had claimed free treatment to which they were not entitled from NHS dentists and opticians. Counter Fraud Services (CFS) investigators recovered £538,000 from these patients, but there are fears the problem is much greater.

Government responds to OFT report on dentistry

The Department of Health has responded to the recent OFT report into dentistry. It acknowledges that the vast majority of patients are happy with their dental treatment and that the majority of dentists behave ethically.PCTs will dentists misleading patients about availability of NHS care. It welcomes the recommendations on better direct access and improved information for patients.

More patients seen: more women working

The number of dental patients seen under the NHS continues to grow. 1.4 million more were seen in the two years to June 2012 compared with 2006. As a percentage of the adult and child populations the rise is more modest. Courses of treatment including a fluoride varnish continue to rise for both adults and children. The number of female dentists working showed an increase during the last year.

Dentists working longer hours

Between 2006/07 and 2011/12 there have been gradual increases in the average weekly hours of dentists, with practice owners increasing from 39.6 to 41.9 hours. Over the same time period, there was also a gradual increase in the proportion of time spent on non-clinical work (including administration). Despite the increase in hours, time spent on clinical work by dentists changed little between 2006/07 and 2011/12.

Dentists’ net earnings down by 8.2% in 2010/11

The earnings figures for dentists in 2011/12 have been published.  Average net earnings for all NHS dentists was £77,900, an 8.2 per cent decrease from £84,900 in 2009/10. The figures do include private earnings. A majority (59.8 per cent) earned a taxable income from NHS and private dentistry of less than £75,000 in 2010/11, compared to 55.8 per cent in 2009/10.

Goodwill values holding up

The latest NASDAL goodwill survey shows that dental practices are selling well and that large practices with NHS contracts are still sought after. According to accountant Alan Suggett the average goodwill as a percentage of turnover for all practices sold in the quarter ending 30th April was 91%, while the average for NHS practices was 105%.
