The Chief Dental Officer for England has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlining what action should be taken when dental practices re-open, just days before face to face care is resumed. But the BDA has warned that there will be no return to ‘business as usual’.

Most of the British public are in favour of extending the Soft Drinks Industry Levy, as known as the sugar tax. Data collected by the Oral Health Foundation shows that 61% of the UK support an expansion of the current sugar tax. Milkshakes, fruit juices, smoothies and alcoholic mixers, which are exempt under the current sugar tax, all received equal backing as possible routes for an extension.

The BDA reports that, following the CDO’s letter confirming that practices in England could open for face-to-face care from 8 June, they have held further discussions with NHS England and the Office of the CDO. They will update members when they have more to share. FGDP(UK) said that, when practices open, the delivery of care ‘will be vastly different to what we knew before COVID-19’.

Fluoride is added to water in order to prevent tooth decay and the new study demonstrates that community water fluoridation is particularly beneficial for the youngest children in the poorest communities.

The CDO (England) has written to all practices to tell them that they should all open from Monday June 8 for all face to face care, but only where they assess that they have the necessary IPC and PPE requirements in place. It gives further advice on the sequencing and scheduling of patients for treatment. But practices must use their clinical judgement of their ability to risk manage the delivery of dental care, as service provision is re-commenced.

Following COVID-19 shutdown in Scotland, the NHS has now published a guide and implementation tools for general dental practices for the next phase of dental services remobilisation. The aim of this guide is to provide advice for primary care dental practices, but warns that as COVID-19 has only emerged in recent months, evidence to inform how to approach reopening is scarce or non-existent.
