Various States in the USA have indicated that they are considering easing restrictions on dentists carrying out routine treatment. The American Dental Association has developed a toolkit to help dentists return to more normal practice operations as some states reopen. The American Dental Hygienists’ Association want to make sure hygienists have access to the necessary protective gear if their offices do reopen.

Tony Jacobs, who spent three weeks in intensive care after contracting coronavirus, has thanked the NHS staff who saved his life. Now he says he wants to repay the nurses and doctors who helped him. A recent report has shown that in the last decade, changes in satisfaction with NHS dentistry services have followed a very different pattern to that for GP services, with satisfaction rising from a low of around 42% in the early-to-mid 2000s to a level similar to the NHS as a whole in 2019.

A dentist has been criticised for selling surplus facemasks for £50 each. Toby Talbot, from the privately-run Talbot Clinic in Bath, has written to people living nearby to offer them a chance to buy FFP3 masks. Bath’s Liberal Democrat MP Wera Hobhouse said it was "disappointing" and any surplus equipment should be given to front-line NHS staff.

In the past week the BDA has published advice on associates following a meeting to the GDPC group. In addition, there is advice on COVID-19 testing for essential workers and the BDA Benevolent Fund. The Association continues to put pressure on NHS England in respect of getting appropriate PPE to be available to dentists.

Amidst ongoing uncertainty around future government restrictions and health advice, MA Exhibitions and their industry partner the BDIA, have taken the decision to move BDIA Dental Showcase from October 2020 to 27 – 28 March 2021. The organisers hope that this move will alleviate growing concerns that an October event would be too soon for the dental profession and an industry battling all the pressures brought on by the current crisis.
