The BDA has published an NHS information package on redeployment of the clinical dental workforce. The NHS says the dental workforce has a wide range of skills and experience that can be utilised to undertake activities that will help clinical colleagues and the wider workforce. The BDA has also given practical guidance for members only on assessing risk and an uopdate on furloughed workers and NHS payments.

The BDA has confirmed that a breakthrough on furlough for mixed practices has been made. Chair Mick Armstrong says it will be a ‘lifeline’ to many practices. The Lancet has also published an article on urgent dental care for patients during the pandemic – a link is given to the full article. Finally, an updated financial support package has been announced for dentists in Northern Ireland.

An international study raises questions over sugar levels in formula baby milk which in some cases can be as much as twice that of Fanta, reports the Daily Telegraph. Researcher, Gemma Bridge, said the use of sweeteners not only encouraged more mothers to buy the products because babies liked them but also risked creating a preference for sweet tastes at a young age which could have a detrimental effect on future eating habits.

The BDA has secured an agreement with NHS England that mixed NHS/private practices, who wish to claim against additional Government support schemes, including the ‘furlough’ of staff, should ensure that this claim is in relation to the proportion of private revenue only. In addition, new personal protective equipment guidance has been issued by the authorities.

Shareena Ilyas has been elected unopposed to the London seat on BDA’s Board, the Principal Executive Committee. This position will run until 31 December 2022. She has worked in various general practice posts across London and south England and as well as being a GDP, is a coach/mentor.

Denplan, part of Simplyhealth, has announced that it has appointed Louis Mackenzie as Head Dental Officer. Louis has been working part-time for Denplan as Head of Clinical Training for the last five years, and this will now be combined to become a full-time role as Head Dental Officer. He will be working closely with and reporting to Catherine Rutland, who is the Clinical Director at Simplyhealth.

Scientists in Japan have published studies that could lead to dramatically low treatment times for patients undergoing adult orthodontics. Researchers at Hokkaido University’s Faculty of Biomechanical Engineering claim to have emulated and surpassed the rapid turnover of bone that normally occurs in actively growing youngsters and facilitates relatively quick treatment times during adolescence.

The BDA reports on a new funding package for Scotland, costs reduction up to 80% on its indemnity package and news from the CQC that they are considering action against practices still offering routine care. They are seeking clarity on NHS payments to dentists, PPE, urgent care centres, redeployment, furlough and they we will continue to press the Government on the issue of financial support for the self-employed.
